Nothing's Better Than the Best!

If you don't appreciate alternative rock as much as I do, you should try listening to some of the best (and my favorite) alternative bands!
If you've never listened to alternative rock before, one good band to try listening to is All Time Low. All Time low is a pretty conventional rock band. They use your basic instruments: guitar, base, and drums. One of the main reasons why they're one of MY favorite bands is because their songs always have a good beat, their songs have a lot of meaning in them, so you can tell that they're not just singing empty words.
Another good band to try is Mayday Parade. Mayday Parade is a lot more hardcore than All Time Low, so they might not be one of your immediate favorites. Their music is very deep and their style is a mix between alternative and punk rock. They are highly recommended!
Some other good bands that are worth trying: Friday Night Boys, The Maine, A Rocket to the Moon, The Starting Line, Never Shout Never, Cartel, Artists Versus Poets

Check 'em out!

Alternative Rock Vs. Mainstream Rock

Most people don't know the difference between alternative rock songs and popular, mainstream rock songs. There truly is a distinct difference...
When you look up songs on iTunes or any other musical catalog or database, you will see that a large percentage of popular rock bands claim to be alternative. When scrolling through the bands you will see widely popular bands like Daughtry and Nickelback.
Millionaire musicians and bands aren't truly alternative. They are really much more like mainstream rock. The big difference between mainstream rock and alternative rock is mainstream rock is more soft, held back, and mixed with pop.

Where It All Began

Here's a little bit of history on alternative rock:
Alternative rock began in the 1980's. It was normally only produced by independent labels and played by college rock stations, but it was never known as an actual "genre". It was mostly an underground phenomenon, and alternative rock bands toured constantly and produced low-budget albums that received very little praise.
In the start of the 1990's the music industry saw the potential of alternative rock in bands like Nirvana, Firehouse, and Dinosaur Jr. The breakthrough success of Nirvana is what led to the popularization of alternative rock in the mid 1990's. The band's single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" instigated the spread of alternative rock. Their album Nevermind encouraged other alternative bands to form, and alternative rock became a popular form of music!

What is Alternative Rock??

My favorite kind of music is alternative rock. Alternative rock became popular after the breakthrough of Nirvana, which was a band that became widespread but did not become a part of mainstream music.
Alternative rock varies greatly, its most common element is normally the electric guitar. Alternative rock bands normally begin as college rock bands and gain and spread their popularty through word of mouth. Many alternative rock bands go mainstream beacuse of the temptation of the amount of fans of mainstream music.
